Building on my dissertation, I am currently drafting my book project, tentatively entitled Caught in the Loop: Black Girls’ Carceral and Abolitionist Past, Present, and Future. Here, I use ethnographic participant observations, in-depth interviews, and life histories with members of the school to understand the carceral and abolitionist experiences of Black girlhood across space and time. I examine how, even in schools that have implemented abolitionist reforms like the removal of school police, carceral processes are still transmitted for Black girls. Ultimately, the manuscript is deeply concerned with abolitionist futurity for Black girlhood.
